Reef Friendly Sunscreen: What to Look for

Calling all ocean lovers! Packing your bags for the beach (or just wishing you were)? Don’t forget the Reef Friendly sunscreen.

Certain chemicals traditionally used in sunscreens can be  harmful to various types of marine life, including coral. These chemicals  accumulate and can cause coral bleaching, and even coral death. Naturally, the fact that coral reefs—which are one of Earth’s most valuable ecosystems—are in danger is devastating news to ocean lovers everywhere.

But there is a way to still enjoy our beach time and do our part to protect the oceans: reef friendly sunscreen. Here’s what to look for to determine whether or not your sunscreen meets safe standards for oceans and marine life, while still protecting you from skin-cancer-causing UV rays.

#1 No Oxybenzone and Octinoxate

These two active ingredients are preservatives commonly used in sunscreen products, but they’re also major culprits when it comes to ocean pollution. Our Sunscreen Lotion SPF 4 is just one of the products we carry that is Reef Friendly and formulated without a number of harmful chemicals, including oxybenzone and octinoxate.

#2 No Aerosol Spray

With aerosol formulas, chemicals are dispersed much more widely into the environment.  All of our continuous spray products , like this SPF 30 option, are aerosol free, making sunscreen application easy and convenient, but without the negative effects  on the environment.

#3 Broad Spectrum

Broad spectrum sunscreen is really the gold standard when it comes to protecting yourself from the sun, meaning it guards against both types of UV rays: UVA and UVB rays. While UVA rays are associated with burning and UVB rays are associated with premature aging, both types of UV rays can be highly damaging and have been shown to contribute to skin cancer formation. Thankfully,  sunscreen can offer broad-spectrum UVA/UVB  protection and still be kind to Mother Earth. A great example is our Sport Suncreen SPF 30 which not only offers broad spectrum protection, but is water resistant and Reef Friendly.
