This colorful oasis is one of the best spots to enjoy a sunrise in all of Portugal. Golden sands, cerulean, crystal clear waters and marvelous rocks rising from the ocean make for a striking sight on those early mornings when the light is just peeking over the horizon. It’s become more commercial in recent years, but it still hasn’t lost its charm.

Praia da Adraga, Sintra

Adraga has become a popular surf spot thanks to the Atlantic breakers that roll into the coast of Europe here. It’s also home to some pretty magnificent cliffs right up against the sands and a unique restaurant built right into the side of one. The clams here are to die for.

Praia da Falesia, Albufeira

Falesia is known for its gorgeous red cliffs providing a backdrop to one of the longest beaches in Portugal. The area is still thought of as a small beach town rather than a touristy hotspot, so it’s the perfect place to enjoy some golden sand without all the crowds of some more popular spots. The area is also home to some spectacular golf courses.

Miramar, Porto

Miramar is a favorite among Portuguese but not as well known among international tourists, so it’s a great place to visit for a more authentic feel. The area boasts one of the country’s best 9-hole golf courses, upscale dining and great architecture. Miramar is also home to Capela do Senhora Pedra, a 17th century chapel located right on the beach. Winter is a great time for surfers to explore the waves, while summer is when locals come to unwind while soaking up the rays.

Marinha Beach has been voted, at times, as the most beautiful beach in the world. It boasts beautiful sandy beaches among a wealth of coves to explore. The area has become immensely popular, so it’s not ideal for those looking for a little peace and quiet. If you’re looking for excitement and adventure, though, there’s perhaps not better beach in Portugal.

If you’re a fan of James Bond, you’ve probably seen this beach before. It served as the shooting locale for the beginning of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, among other films. Several sporting events are held here throughout the year, including surfing and body boarding competitions. It’s famous for its orange rocks and dramatic sunsets and storms.

Praia da Rocha is an excellent place for those traveling with kids in tow. The endless array of caves to explore make for an awesome family adventure, or even just adults. The area isn’t very busy at all, so you don’t have to worry about being swarmed with tourists. It’s a favorite among locals and Europeans in the know.

Praia do Castelo, Algarve

Castelo Beach is a hidden treasure tucked away near the more popular sands of Albufeira. It’s not easy to get to and is somewhat arduous of an adventure, but the views and privacy here are worth the trek. There are also some pretty fantastic restaurants where you can dine along the ocean and watch the waves crawl into the cliffs.
