With so many options to choose from, buying sunscreen can be a daunting task. Here is a handy guide to help you find the perfect sunscreen pack for your next day in the sun:

What level of SPF are you looking for?

For starters, in order to know which sunscreen set is the best match for you, it is important to understand SPF, or sun protection factor. SPF is a number that indicates the amount of solar exposure it will take for your skin to start burning when you apply a certain sunscreen, versus the amount it would take if you didn’t wear any sunscreen. For example, with an SPF 50 sunscreen, it would take 50 times longer to burn than if you weren’t wearing sunscreen at all.

There are a number of different SPF levels you can choose from depending on your desired level of protection.

– SPF 0–8: These low-level SPFs give zero or minimal protection against the sun and do not prevent sunburn, but they are useful for people looking to add a little color to their skin.

– SPF 15: This is the minimal level of protection recommended by the FDA for protection against sun exposure. SPF 15 blocks about 93% of UVB radiation.

– SPF 30: The Melanoma Research Foundation recommends at least SPF 30 for sufficient protection against cancer-causing UV rays. SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays.

– SPF 50 or above: High-level SPFs are essential for anyone wanting to minimize the potential damage by UVB and UVA rays as much as possible. SPF 50 blocks about 98% of UVB rays.

Other Factors to Consider

Broad Spectrum Protection

UVB rays are responsible for sunburns and most types of cancer. UVA rays lead to skin aging, and they also play a role in some skin cancers. To get protection from both, look for a sunscreen set containing products with Broad Spectrum labels, which can only be added if the sunscreen passes the FDA Broad Spectrum Test.

Water and Sweat Resistance

First, no sunscreen can ever include the label “waterproof” or “sweatproof” since that would be overstating sunscreen’s effectiveness (water and sweat wear down all sunscreens eventually). To be called water or sweat resistant, a sunscreen’s SPF must remain effective for either 40 minutes or 80 minutes while a person swims or sweats. Panama Jack Sport Sunscreens offer 80-minute protection—the highest water resistance level that can be awarded by the FDA. This means you’ll receive protection for up to 80 minutes before needing to reapply.

Amount of Sunscreen

While exact amounts may vary depending on the person, you should aim for at least one ounce of sunscreen (about the size of a golf ball) to cover your body and face. When using spray sunscreens, which can be harder to measure, a good rule of thumb is to spray until you reach an even shine before rubbing the product into your skin. Make sure you also apply an SPF 45 Lip Balm to protect your lips’ sensitive skin.

Reapplication Frequency

If you’ve ever been sunburned after you swore you put on enough sunscreen, you may not have reapplied frequently enough. You should reapply at least every two hours, and even more often after swimming, sweating, or drying off with a towel. Additionally, you should apply your sunscreen 15 minutes before any sun exposure to give the product sufficient time to absorb into your skin.

A Multi-Layered Approach

Experts also strongly recommend using a multi-layered strategy that, in addition to sunscreen, includes UV-protective clothing, such as our performance short and long sleeve shirts with a UPF 35+ rating. You should also throw on a wide-brimmed, UPF-rated hat for extra protection on your face, ears, and neck. To protect your eyes, which are often neglected when it comes to sun protection, opt for sunglasses that offer 100% UVA/UVB protection.
