Africa covers 30,221,532 km², so it should come as no surprise that along its coasts, there are some seriously beautiful beaches. It would be difficult, nay, virtually impossible to list them all but we’ve managed to highlight a few that deserve serious consideration. Whether you’re looking to incorporate a little rest and relaxation into your itinerary or are seeking a little adventure served with a side of breathtaking beauty, here’s hoping this helpful guide will make planning your African beach trip a little easier
Anse Source d’Argent (La Digue, Seychelles)
There’s a reason that people take so many photos of Anse Source d’Argent. It’s absolutely, breathtakingly gorgeous. The granite formations look like they were sculpted by a master artist, the foliage is so green it looks Photoshopped, and the water is impossibly clear. If you’ve got a beach bucket list, Anse Source d’Argent should be at the very top. Don’t forget your camera!

Diani Beach (Ukunda, Kenya)
Featuring 20 km of crystal clear water, sun-warmed sand, and swaying palm trees, Kenya’s Diani Beach has become a hotspot and for good reason. Touted by some as the best beach in Kenya, Diani is the perfect place for adventure seekers (they offer kitesurfing lessons), laid-back sunbathers, and everyone in between.
Trou aux Biches (Mauritius)
If you’re looking for a place to totally and completely unwind, you’ve come to the right spot. Trou aux Biches (which, incidentally, means does’ watering hole) is a laid-back, family friendly gem that offers calm water, soft sand, both conducive to an absolutely amazing day at the beach. Be sure to bring the kids as there are plenty of activities that will keep them busy and just as happy as you will be.
Essaouira (Morocco)
Once surrounded by fortress walls, Essaouira is a port city in Morocco that invokes feelings that only come from being surrounded by salty air, warm breezes, and a convivial vibe. Because of the near-constant wind (Essaouira has been nicknamed the Wind Capital of Africa), kite surfers consider it a paradise found and are generally delighted to spend their days gliding across the waveless bay. It also features a thriving fishing scene, a community of incredibly talented artists, mouthwatering restaurants… seriously, it has everything! River Number Two Beach (Sierra Leone)
If you’re looking for something that’s a little off the beaten path, River Number Two is the beach for you. It’s a no-fuss local spot tucked away from the bustle of the city but still easy to access. You could pack yourself a picnic lunch but if you really want to experience the beach in all of its glory, order a couple of kebabs from the vendors who have set up on site- you absolutely won’t regret it.
Boulders Beach (Simon’s Town, South Africa)
What makes Boulders Beach so awesome? Why, the African Penguins, of course. These cute little birds have made Boulders Beach their home and unwittingly serve as a source of constant entertainment to tourists and locals alike. In addition to featuring adorable wildlife, the beach is a great spot to spend the day swimming in the ocean, jumping off the boulders, and just taking in all the beauty that this spot has to offer. Whether you’re making it a destination in and of itself or just passing through en route to Cape Town, Boulders Beach should absolutely not be missed.
