First described as a “water beast” by Adomnán in the seventh century AD, the Loch Ness Monster (Nessie, if you’re close) has been making appearances in all sorts of tall tales and I-swear-it’s-true stories for a very, very long time. While the descriptions of the alleged monster vary, the consensus holds that she’s very large and, if she catches you off guard, very scary.

Efforts to prove Nessie’s existence have been plentiful but so far, no definitive evidence has been put forward. Sightings have popped up as recently as 2014, when Apple’s mapping system captured what many claim to be a shot of the aquatic beast.
