How Does Mineral Sunscreen Work?

Often referred to as physical sunscreen, mineral sunscreens contain active mineral ingredients, such as Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide, that sit on top of the skin and form a “physical” barrier. This mineral shield works to protect your skin by both reflecting and absorbing the sun’s rays.

Traditional, non-mineral sunscreens work a bit differently. Synthetic active ingredients in traditional sunscreen act as a sort of sponge, absorbing the sun’s UV rays, converting them into heat, and then releasing them from the body.

How Should Mineral Sunscreen Be Applied?

The secret to getting the most out of your mineral sunscreen? Much like traditional sunscreen, it’s all about following the correct application guidelines. If you prefer a continuous spray mineral sunscreen, be sure you’re in a ventilated area and that you shake the product well before applying. Whether you opt for a spray or a lotion, take the time to thoroughly rub in the product. This ensures even coverage and gives you the non-greasy clear finish you’re looking for.

Mineral or non-mineral, spray or lotion — No matter the type of sunscreen, there are a few general application tips that you should always follow.

– Use at least one ounce of sunscreen (about what it takes to fill up a shot glass) to evenly cover your body.
– Apply your sunscreen 15 minutes before any sun exposure.
– Never neglect your face’s sensitive skin. If you’re using a spray, spray the sunscreen into your hands and then apply it to your face.
– Make sure to reapply at least every two hours, or 80 minutes after swimming or sweating. If you just toweled off after a dip in the water, reapply immediately.
