How to Use It

Drink lots of water. A sunburn draws fluid to your skin and away from the rest of your body, which can lead to dehydration. The Skin Cancer Foundation also recommends drinking sports drinks to help restore your electrolytes.

You’ve probably already heard that kids are at high risk for sun damage, but why is that the case? During the first six months of life, a baby’s skin is at its most vulnerable. Even as they grow older, young children still have thin, delicate skin compared to adults. In addition, they haven’t developed all of the melanin (the pigment that offers small levels of natural sun protection) that they’ll have when they are fully grown.
These factors mean exposure to UVA and UVB rays can cause serious damage. UVB rays are the sun’s rays that are responsible for causing painful sunburns and most forms of skin cancer over time. UVA rays are the sun’s rays that lead to the early aging of our skin. Although their effects appear in different ways, all types of UV radiation can contribute to your child’s risk of developing skin cancer.
UVA rays can be particularly dangerous as they can damage your child’s skin in ways that you don’t often notice. They can easily penetrate through glass and even clouds on the most overcast days. Even if your kid joins you on an errand or plays inside near a sunny window, they can still experience sun damage, which can quickly accumulate.
This is where Broad Spectrum SPF sunscreen comes in. When labeled as Broad Spectrum, sunscreen helps minimize the UVA and UVB rays that reach your child’s skin, making it a must-have for every day under the sun.
SUNSCREEN GUIDELINES TO FOLLOW
It’s important to help your child develop good sun safety practices from an early age. Follow these expert-recommended best practices to help them have a fun and safe time outside.
When it comes to sun protection for newborns and babies under six months old, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends keeping them out of direct sunlight completely. When you can’t avoid direct sunlight, it’s important to dress them in sun-protective clothing and a UPF-rated hat. You should also keep them in the shade or, if that’s not possible, create shade with an umbrella or stroller hood. If shade isn’t available at all, parents should apply a minimal amount of Broad Spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen on exposed areas. For specific guidance on how to protect your baby’s skin, be sure to consult a pediatrician or a board-certified dermatologist.
To protect children over six months of age, you need to follow many of the same guidelines you’d follow for yourself. In addition to ensuring your child avoids direct sunlight during peak hours and is wearing protective clothing, you should always apply sunscreen of SPF 30 (or higher) at least 15 minutes before they experience any sun exposure. Be sure to use a generous amount, about an ounce to cover their whole body. When in doubt, apply even more than you think you need.
If your kid spends extended amounts of time in the water, whether during a swimming lesson or while having fun at the beach, regularly reapply water resistant sunscreen at least once every 80 minutes. If they haven’t been swimming, sweating, or toweling off, you should still reapply at least every two hours.
OTHER MUST-KNOW SUN SAFETY TIPS
Use a Broad Spectrum sunscreen
For maximum defense against the sun’s dangerous UV rays, it’s best to use a Broad Spectrum sunscreen, which will offer protection against UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays are responsible for sunburns and most types of cancer. UVA rays lead to skin aging, and they also play a role in some skin cancers.
Limit time in the sun during peak hours
The sun is the strongest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., so kids (and adults) should avoid direct sun exposure during these hours whenever possible.
Consider a higher SPF
Your child needs a minimum SPF of 30. For added protection, you can’t go wrong with an SPF 50 sunscreen. Just remember: you shouldn’t assume a higher SPF means less sunscreen is required. You still need to apply a sufficient amount for it to be effective.
Go for water resistant sunscreen
If your kid loves to get active, a water resistant sunscreen is a must. Our Baby and Kids’ Sunscreens are water and sweat resistant for 80 minutes, meaning the sunscreen will remain effective for up to 80 minutes on wet skin. After that time, or immediately after towel drying, you’ll need to reapply.
Use protective clothing
For a multi-layered sun safety approach, dress your child in protective clothing, like a long sleeve shirt and a hat with a wide brim. And finally, don’t forget to have your child wear a fun pair of sunglasses with 100% UVA/UVB protection.
Choose a gentle sunscreen formula
Kids and babies have sensitive skin, so opt for a sunscreen, like Panama Jack’s, that doesn’t contain PABA, Parabens, Retinyl Palmitate, Dyes, BHT, and other potentially irritating or harmful ingredients.
Encourage sun safety habits often and early
We acquire 23% of the sun damage we’ll experience during our life by the time we’re 18 years old, so sunscreen shouldn’t just be reserved for long days in the sun. To show your child the importance of sun protection, model healthy habits by applying sunscreen daily.
Make sunscreen application fun
Sunscreen isn’t easy to apply correctly when your kid starts squirming or getting upset. To make the application process fun, you could let them “paint” on the sunscreen or create fun shapes with the sunscreen before you rub it in (always making sure you’re still applying a sufficient amount). As they get older, consider giving them more say in the process, such as letting them choose from a sunscreen spray or lotion.

What Kind of Protection Do You Need?
When people hear “sun protection,” their minds often jump to using sunscreen to prevent skin damage. What they may not realize is that protecting their eyes is just as important. In fact, UV exposure can lead to corneal damage, cataracts, and more, ultimately decreasing the quality of your vision. On top of that, your eyelid skin is extremely thin, so year-round UV damage can easily lead to signs of aging and various forms of skin cancer.

Winter conditions can cause just as much damage, if not more. Despite what many people think, UV rays can still penetrate through clouds on cold, overcast days. If you live in snowy climates, the risk of UV damage could be even higher. Snow reflects 90 percent of the light that hits it, so having the right eye protection is critical.

How Should Mineral Sunscreen Be Applied?
Mineral sunscreen comes with numerous benefits, but how do you take full advantage of what it has to offer? Much like traditional sunscreen, it’s all about following the correct application guidelines. If you prefer a continuous spray mineral sunscreen, be sure you’re in a ventilated area and that you shake the product well before applying. Whether you opt for a spray or a lotion, take the time to thoroughly rub in the product. This ensures even coverage and gives you the non-greasy clear finish you’re looking for.
Mineral or non-mineral, spray or lotion — no matter the type of sunscreen, there are a few general application tips that you should always follow.
– Use at least one ounce of sunscreen (about what it takes to fill up a shot glass) to evenly cover your body.
– Apply your sunscreen 15 minutes before any sun exposure.
– Don’t forget about face sunscreen. If utilizing a spray, spray the sunscreen into your hands and then apply it to your face.
– For continuous protection, ensure you reapply your sunscreen at least every two hours, or after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating. If you just dried off with a towel after a dip in the water, reapply immediately.

Formulated to help you feel good and stay safe from the sun while you pursue an outdoor lifestyle, Panama Jack’s multi-functional sport sunscreen lotions and continuous sprays come in a non-greasy, Broad Spectrum, and 80-minute water and sweat-resistant formula. What’s more, you can select from a range of SPF levels, from SPF 30 all the way up to SPF 100.
Our clear zinc oxide, Broad Spectrum Sport Sunscreen lotions come in convenient TSA-approved, 3 FL OZ tubes, making them ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who want on-demand sun protection. All Panama Jack Sport Sunscreens have an 80-minute water resistance rating, meaning they will offer protection for up to 80 minutes before needing to be reapplied. This is the highest rating that can be awarded by the FDA.

SPORT SUNSCREEN VS REGULAR SUNSCREEN
When choosing your next bottle of sunscreen, you might wonder how sport sunscreens differ from your typical sunscreen lotion or spray. First, not all regular sunscreens will offer Broad Spectrum protection. Unless you see a Broad Spectrum label, you can assume your regular sunscreen will only protect you from UVB rays, not UVA rays. Sport sunscreens, including ours, typically offer you protection from both.
You’ll also rarely see sport sunscreens with lower SPF ratings. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, SPF 15 (or higher) is sufficient as daily sunscreen. When you have a long or action-packed outdoor day planned, you’ll want higher SPF, which is why sport sunscreens most often come in SPF 30 or higher.
If you’ll be spending extended time immersed in water, sport sunscreens are the clear winner over your usual bottle. Sport sunscreens are typically designed to resist water, and they must be tested before they can actually be labeled using the term water resistant. Unless you see that label on your regular sunscreen, your protection may wash away with profuse sweating or water immersion.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Water Resistance
Whether you’re biking, hiking, or swimming, you don’t want your sun protection washing off when you’re under the beating sun. While there’s no such thing as a waterproof formula, a water resistant sunscreen can receive different ratings according to its effectiveness. First, every sunscreen must undergo the FDA’s rigorous testing procedures. From there, sunscreen can be labeled either as water resistant for up to 40 minutes (water resistant) or 80 minutes (very water resistant). These numbers tell you how long you can stay in the water while still being protected from the sun.
SPF 30 or Higher
If your outdoor activity involves long stretches under the sun (even when it’s cloudy), you’ll want a minimum SPF of 30. This will provide protection from 97% of UVB rays. There’s no such thing as too much sun protection, so if you’re looking for even stronger defense, opt for an SPF 50 or SPF 100, which will shield you from 98% and 99% of UVB rays.
Broad Spectrum
Along with sufficient SPF, another key factor to look for in any sport sunscreen is Broad Spectrum protection. A Broad Spectrum sunscreen will protect you from both UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays are responsible for sunburns and most types of cancer. UVA rays lead to skin aging, and they also play a role in some skin cancers.
Skin-Friendly Formula
You’ll likely be wearing your sunscreen for multiple hours, so look out for sport sunscreens that are formulated without ingredients that could potentially harm your skin and body. Panama Jack’s Sport Sunscreens do not contain Gluten, Parabens, PABA, Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, Retinyl, Palmitate, BHT, or Dyes.
Your Preferred Consistency
Just like regular sunscreens, sport sunscreens are available in different forms, such as lotions and sprays, and you can’t go wrong with any of these options, as long as you apply them correctly.
HOW TO APPLY IT CORRECTLY
To get the most out of your sport sunscreen, you need to apply it properly, and application methods vary depending on the formula you choose. One common rule, however, is that you’ll need at least an ounce of product to cover your entire body. You should also apply your sunscreen at least 15 minutes before sun exposure.
But how do you actually know if you’re applying the recommended amount? When using a lotion, measure out about a teaspoon of product for the area of the body you’re applying to, massage it thoroughly into the skin, and repeat on the next area. When in doubt, apply even more sunscreen than you think you need.
Spray sunscreens are known for being easy to apply, but you’ll still need to follow the application guidelines. Too often, people haphazardly spray the product in the general vicinity of their bodies, rather than taking the time to target each body part. When applying a spray sunscreen, you’ll still need about a teaspoon per body area, but this can be a bit more difficult to measure with a spray bottle. To get the minimum amount of protection recommended by experts (about 2mg per square centimeter), you should spray each body area for at least six seconds. After you’ve sprayed the product, use your hands to rub it in, making sure you’ve covered all exposed areas.

Regardless of where you live, summer is the time of year when the sun’s rays reach the earth at a more direct angle. This results in long and often sunny days as well as a higher risk of exposing your eyes to potentially damaging light. Not only does UV intensity tend to be stronger, but the amount of time we spend outdoors usually increases significantly in the summer. A summer beach day, for example, means you’ll likely spend hours and hours around sand and water, which reflect about 10% and 15% of UV radiation.
Summer isn’t the only time of year you can benefit from UV-protective sunglasses. Winter can be just as harsh on your eyes (if not more). Even on short, overcast winter days, UV rays can still penetrate the clouds and cause damage. People in snowy climates are even more at risk. Snow reflects 80 to 90 percent of the light that hits it, and without any eye protection, you could experience snow blindness, which is essentially a sunburn on your eye that can cause irritation and, in some cases, severe pain. POLARIZED PROTECTION

– Polarized lenses block glare by filtering light. Non-polarized sunglasses reduce the overall intensity of light but don’t have the same ability to reduce sun glare.

HOW TO USE IT
To ensure you apply your sunscreen effectively, first consider what type of activities you’ll be engaging in while outside. For those planning to spend extended periods in the water or playing sports, water resistant sunscreen offers an added layer of security, so your skin remains protected even during high-intensity activities or immersion in water for 80 minutes.
Also, consider whether you prefer a mineral or traditional sunscreen. Mineral sunscreens contain active minerals such as zinc oxide that sit on the skin to reflect and absorb UV rays. Traditional sunscreens, on the other hand, penetrate the skin and absorb UV radiation, converting it into heat and releasing it from the body.
Those with sensitive skin, eczema, or chronic acne often favor mineral sunscreens, but both are safe and reliable. Choose according to your preferences. After all, the most effective sunscreen is one you’ll actually use!
Step 2: Follow Application Guidelines
No matter which formula or level of protection you choose, proper application is key to making sure your sunscreen is effective. First, make sure you’re using the correct amount of sunscreen. According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, adults need at least one ounce to cover their entire body.
Sunscreen lotions must also be fully absorbed into the skin, so thoroughly rub in the sunscreen lotion until you can no longer see it on your skin. Be sure to also apply a specially-formulated face sunscreen and SPF lip balm to protect the more sensitive areas of skin on your face. And don’t forget to apply sunscreen on those overlooked spots like the tops of the feet, back of the hands, along the hairline, and even on your scalp.
The best way to ensure full coverage is to apply sunscreen lotion before getting dressed for the day. This way, you know your skin is protected if your clothes shift or if you remove layers. Should you choose only to apply sunscreen on exposed areas, be sure to apply at least 15 minutes before you head out the door. Additionally, always remember that you need to reapply your sunscreen at least every two hours for continuous protection. After extensive sweating, swimming, or toweling off, your sunscreen should be reapplied immediately!

Even if you only run an errand or two or work inside near a sunny window, you can still experience sun damage, which builds up over time.
Though their effects appear in different ways, all types of UV radiation can contribute to your risk of developing skin cancer, so Broad Spectrum SPF sunscreen should be a pillar of your daily skincare routine.
In addition to minimizing your risk of skin cancer, scientific studies have shown that people who use Broad Spectrum sunscreen daily experience less skin aging than people who only use sunscreen occasionally.
What are the consequences of inadequate sun protection? When you’re exposed to the sun, UV radiation targets your DNA. Your body can repair some damage on its own. However, the remaining damage can accumulate. This can cause your DNA cells to forget their normal functions. As a result, they may begin to mutate and replicate too quickly, which can lead to cancer.
Luckily, you can reduce your risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma by 40 percent and your risk of melanoma by 50 percent when you use a Broad Spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 every day.
WHEN TO USE IT

Sunscreen is probably the first thing you pack in your beach bag, and if you forget, it’s your first purchase before you head to the beach. What level of SPF are you looking for?
For starters, in order to know which sunscreen set is the best match for you, it is important to understand SPF, or sun protection factor. SPF is a number that indicates the amount of solar exposure it will take for your skin to start burning when you apply a certain sunscreen, versus the amount it would take if you didn’t wear any sunscreen. For example, with an SPF 50 sunscreen, it would take 50 times longer to burn than if you weren’t wearing sunscreen at all.
There are a number of different SPF levels you can choose from depending on your desired level of protection.
– SPF 0–8: These low-level SPFs give zero or minimal protection against the sun and do not prevent sunburn, but they are useful for people looking to add a little color to their skin.
– SPF 15: This is the minimal level of protection recommended by the FDA for protection against sun exposure. SPF 15 blocks about 93% of UVB radiation.
– SPF 30: The Melanoma Research Foundation recommends at least SPF 30 for sufficient protection against cancer-causing UV rays. SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays.

Broad Spectrum Protection
UVB rays are responsible for sunburns and most types of cancer. UVA rays lead to skin aging, and they also play a role in some skin cancers. To get protection from both, look for a sunscreen set containing products with Broad Spectrum labels, which can only be added if the sunscreen passes the FDA Broad Spectrum Test.
Water and Sweat Resistance
First, no sunscreen can ever include the label “waterproof” or “sweatproof” since that would be overstating sunscreen’s effectiveness (water and sweat wear down all sunscreens eventually). To be called water or sweat resistant, a sunscreen’s SPF must remain effective for either 40 minutes or 80 minutes while a person swims or sweats. Panama Jack Sport Sunscreens offer 80-minute protection—the highest water resistance level that can be awarded by the FDA. This means you’ll receive protection for up to 80 minutes before needing to reapply.

While exact amounts may vary depending on the person, you should aim for at least one ounce of sunscreen (about the size of a golf ball) to cover your body and face. HOW TO APPLY YOUR SUNSCREEN SPRAY CORRECTLY
Spray-on sunscreen is extremely easy to apply once you’ve mastered the application guidelines. But too often, people either don't use enough or don’t do a sufficient job of rubbing in the product. As a result, they don’t get adequate levels of protection.
When using your sunscreen spray, be sure that you are doing two important things. First, make sure you're getting close enough to your skin (four to six inches) and that you're spraying for a long enough time.
Secondly, it takes about an ounce of sunscreen to cover an adult body. But this can be hard to measure accurately. Experts recommend spraying each section of your body for up to six seconds to get adequate protection.
One rule of thumb for ensuring you’ve sprayed enough is to spray your sunscreen until your skin glistens. Think of it like applying spray paint, not perfume. If you can’t see it on your skin, you can assume that it’s not there and it won’t be able to give you the protection you need. For the best coverage, focus the spray on each body part you want to protect from the sun.
Once your skin is glistening, take the time to rub in the sunscreen thoroughly. You should be able to clearly see that you’ve covered all exposed areas of your body. While you can spray sunscreen directly on your body, you shouldn’t do this on your face. Instead, spray the sunscreen on your hands and then rub it evenly onto your face.
Like you’d do with other types of sunscreen, apply your spray sunscreen at least 15 minutes before going outside. This ensures it has time to absorb into your skin. And make sure you reapply at least every two hours.
When you are swimming, sweating in the hot sun, and frequently toweling off, your sunscreen will wear off more rapidly. For continuous protection, reapply after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating and immediately after towel drying.

HOW DO THEY WORK?
The feel and consistency of tanning oils and lotions may differ, but they both work the same way. Unlike normal SPF sunscreens, these products attract and focus UV rays onto your skin, which activate your body’s melanocytes and cause them to produce melanin at a quicker rate. The more melanin your skin has, the faster it will tan.
What’s more, our tanning lotions and oils are formulated with moisturizing oils, vitamins and antioxidants. Together, these ingredients nourish your skin and help to promote a more radiant tan.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
When exploring your tanning options, understanding the purpose of tanning products is crucial. Tanning oils and lotions aren’t designed with the goal of protecting your skin, so there are plenty of products that come with zero UV defense. But if you do want some level of sun protection, opt for a tanning product with SPF, or instead, grab a bottle of Broad Spectrum sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher to use while you sunbathe.

When deciding between an oil versus a lotion, you don’t need to worry about the results, as they work the same way. Instead, shop based on your personal preferences. For those that prefer a fast-absorbing product, a tanning lotion is a great choice. Want that just-out-of-the-water glisten? Tanning oils offer ultimate luminosity.
You should also consider the level of moisture you’re looking for. Oils, though water-free, form a barrier over the skin to effectively lock in moisture. Lotions, which generally contain water, are great at adding more hydration.
HOW TO USE IT
For best results, apply your tanning oil or lotion similar to how you’d apply sunscreen. Pour a generous amount onto the part of the body you’re covering and spread the product with your hands to form an even layer. When using any of our pump or continuous spray tanning oils, you should also distribute the product by hand after spraying liberally. Be sure to reapply every two hours, or more often if you’ve been swimming or sweating.
No matter which tanning product you choose, there are a few rules of thumb you should follow. First, keep in mind that anything with an SPF under 15 (including 0 sunscreen products) does not protect against sunburn. And they won’t guard against those UV rays that can increase your risk of cancer and skin aging. To reduce those risks, make sure you apply Broad Spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, and don’t forget to rock a hat and some shades for maximum protection.
Additionally, be extra cautious about any areas on your body that are sensitive to the sun, such as your face. Make sure to sunbathe in moderation – ideally seeking shade between 10 am and 4 pm, when the sun's rays are the strongest. If you are heading out for a full day under the sun, consider bringing extra protection like a hat, sunglasses, and umbrella.
